In the beginning when Pakistan came into being, there was not any well established education system available, so University of the Punjab took the responsibility to conduct all the examinations of matric, inter, fa, fsc, icom and ics level. But later in 1954 an Ordinance was passed and these rights were transferred to the Punjab Board of Secondary Education and it was held responsible to control the examinations of SSc & HSSc Pakistani and Classical Languages. In 1955 the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Lahore conducted the first ever examination for these level.
In the beginning it inherited a very large huge jurisdictions for taking different level examinations in provinces of Punjab, Azad Kashmir, Baluchistan and Northern Areas. It had also created examination centres in different countries like Kenya and Kuwait to facilitate the students by providing examination places at their door steps.
In these days the jurisdiction are defined in more confined areas and it includes the districts of Okara, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Lahore and Nankana Sahib.
Due to very huge increase in the number of students, the authorities decided to establish two more Boards at Sargodha and Multan under the Ordinance No.XVII of 1968 and these bodies were held reliable for the Secondary School and Intermediate Education in West Pakistan. Later on with the passage of time, more splitting of Boards took place and Gujranwala and Rawalpindi Boards were established and the Lahore Board was reconstructed under Punjab Ordinance No.XLVII. Now there are total eight educational Boards performing the duties of administrative setup in the province at division level.
Chairperson of the Board has the authority in all the meetings of Board, and he controls the office of Board and it’s principal executive. In the matters of examinations and administration he can get assistance from the Secretary and Controller of examinations.
It is the main objective of this board to make the nationals of Pakistan an educated nationals, that’s why Board conducts the papers in completely fair, unbiased and transparent environment, so the youth of current era can contribute positively in this competitive world.
