Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) is one of the largest university of South Punjab and is located in Multan, Punjab, Pakistan. It was formerly known as Multan University, later on it was renamed in honor of Hazrat Baha-ud-din Zakariya. It is a degree awarding institute in more than 23 subjects, including medical, pharmacy, engineering, business administration, humanities, law, arts, music, IT Agriculture and languages. Currently it is ranked at No. 3 in general category of University by (HEC) Higher Education Commission.
Initially the University started it’s functioning in a rented building in 1975 with 8 departments. But at the moment it has grown too much and have built many sub campuses. As it is a general University, so mainly it provides instructions in Science and Arts subjects. But keeping in view the fact that agriculture is the mainstay of this region, it is committed to provide the high quality education and training to solve the agricultural problems.
There are three kind of unions exist in this University, MSM which is controlled by Minhaj Ul Quran, Jamiat which is controlled by some JUI and P.S.F which is well known as peoples students federation, it is controlled by local MPA and MNA. At the moment P.S.F is ruling as it won with majority of votes. The infrastructure of the University is located at Bosan Road Multan, at a distance of 10 kilometers from city center. The main campus is spread over 960 acres of land.
The main objective of BZU is to provide the facilities of research and higher education to the students of Southern region of Punjab, including the Civil administrative divisions of Dera Ghazi Khan and Multan. The main functions of this institution are affiliation, teaching and conducting examinations and has seventy nine affiliated colleges which includes some of the old and prestigious institutions like Government College, Burewala, Government Emerson College Multan, Nishtar Medical College, Sahiwal Medical College and NFC College of technology.
